The American Bar Association has dropped plans to revisit its earlier decision naming Brett Kavanaugh "well qualified" for the U.S. Supreme Court, now that he has been confirmed for the job, CNN reported Monday.
ABA's Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary rates judicial nominees on their qualifications for the position. Committee members are not supposed to consider politics but rather competency for the job. Kavanaugh's nomination was deemed "well qualified," the same rating given to every Supreme Court nominee in recent history.
However, the rating was given before allegation of sexual assault surfaced concerning Kavanaugh. ABA took the unusual step of asking the U.S. Senate to delay voting until after an investigation could be conducted. The association later announced it would review Kavanaugh's rating following his emotional testimony before senators.
Now ABA has quietly dropped the review, CNN reported, citing an anonymous source. The association has a policy of ending its rating process once a nominee is confirmed.
"Per the published policy and historical practice of the Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary, once a justice or judge is confirmed, the Standing Committee's rating process is closed," the ABA's website states.
Kavanaugh was sworn in to office Oct. 6. https://cnn.it/2yBU8nY
